An interesting experiment is to place some metronomes on a rigid surface and start them at different times: we will notice how these keep their starting time remaining out of phase in time. However, if we place them on an oscillating surface, even if they are started at different times, the metronomes manage to get in phase in a very short time, thus creating a coherent whole thanks to the medium: the tilting surface becomes able to dialogue with each of them.
