The Sacra di San Michele, or abbey of San Michele della Chiusa, is an architectural complex perched on the summit of Mount Pirchiriano, at the entrance to the Susa valley, in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont. It is located on an imposing 26 meter base at 960 meters above sea level, overlooking the top of Mount Pirchiriano on the border between the Cottian Alps and the Po Valley, and is the symbolic monument of Piedmont and has largely inspired the historical novel by Umberto Eco The Name of The rose.
The most certain sources speak of the time of Saint John Vincent, the archbishop of Ravenna who retired to a hermit life in these areas between the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th century. According to legend, the former archbishop had a vision of the Archangel Michael, who ordered him to build a sanctuary. The same angels would finally consecrate the chapel, which at night was seen by the population as if enveloped in a great fire.
Paintings depicting landscapes help us relax with colors that evoke calm and tranquility. In my opinion there is everything in this: a riot of colors and a mantle of serenity that envelops them.
